Guilty Secret!

Don’t judge me unless you’ve never watched any reality TV or telenovelas or even fluff-news documentaries. I am totally addicted to the Netflix series “Made in Mexico.” It’s lifestyles-of-the-rich-and-famous but set in Mexico City during Trump’s attacks on the country. Wow! Spoiled, shallow, and privileged but still living under U.S. oppression! (It’s a contradiction, ain’t it?) The screenshots above are like a love letter to Mexico City. The show makes me think of Porfirio Diaz’ quote, “SO FAR FROM GOD, SO CLOSE TO THE UNITED STATES.” Twitter says, “Made in Mexico” is inexcusable trash! It’s that and worse, but I cannot stop watching it. (Don’t judge me! Y’all watched Versailles and Kirsten Dunst’s Marie Antoinette.)

All of the screencaps above remind me of the city I lived and worked in for several years as an adult–all very familiar locations to me. All around one are reminders of a brutal and unique history in the shadow of those volcanoes (on a clear day visible on the city skylines) in a country composed, even pre-conquest, of diverse peoples, languages, and cultures. It took me well over a decade for the edge of my grief to soften at the thought of leaving that city and country and coming back to the U.S.

The lifestyle in this show is nothing like mine, although I did see those people around me. I was an American journalist living on a Mexican salary–privileged in Mexico, but edge-of-destitution poor by many of your standards. The people in this show are living on let-them-eat-cake standards.

I have more screenshots, but will save those to closer to  El Día de los Muertos!
