“The truly cultured are capable of owning thousands of unread books without losing their composure or their desire for more.”

— Gabriel Zaid

This is me!! Almost literally. Once, my son’s homework had a question of “how many books are in your house?” I walked around the house counting. Then went to the basement and counted some more. It was just about 1000. And I’ve sold 100s of books to half price. (Okay, and then I generally come home with more.). And I still have over 1000.

When I got divorced we had a dispute over our joint library. I made a list of around 4,000 books which we held in common at the time we split up and annotated which ones should belong to me and why. The judge said, “I have never seen such a contentious property settlement dispute over so little cash value.” (We had only a small handful of valuable books–a few first editions, rare, and autographed ones. Mainly they were just one’s ordinary used books–carefully curated, however, on my part!)   After that, I completely lost my desire to collect physical copies of books. Now, it is all about access to their contents for me. My Kindle has 1,300 books at the moment.
